simplejev/jevany is an open infrastructure for training, evaluating, and deploying System 1 decision-making models on top of language and multimodal backbones, as the repository itself describes it. The October 29, 2026 commit 7832fd7 changed the behavior of silently ignoring precision (dtype)-related environment configuration into an explicit error. The overall change consists of 88 added lines and 7 deleted lines across 3 files, namely jevany/checkpoint.py, jevany/runtime.py, and tests/test_load_options.py. The original is at github.com/SimpleJev/JevAny/commit/7832fd7ba3b0ba4205bf9f6d3457a7256e11e24e.
Precision (dtype) is the bit format in which a model stores and computes numbers, and this project supports three of them: fp32, fp16, and bf16. The previous LoadOptions.from_env() handled the JEVANY_DTYPE value through dictionary lookup, so unsupported strings such as 'bfloat16' or 'BF16' were also ignored without error, and loading proceeded with no precision specified. Now only the case where the variable is unset or an empty string is left as unset, and any other value raises ValueError('JEVANY_DTYPE must be fp32, fp16 or bf16'). The same commit also changed the CLI's --dtype flag to be applied before the environment variable, so that an explicit argument overrides JEVANY_DTYPE, and the environment variable is merged in as a copy, so the os.environ values are not changed.
The point that the error occurs before the checkpoint is found is also pinned down by tests. 75 lines were added to the test file, checking the distinction between supported values and rejected values (bfloat16, float16, float32, b16, BF16, and ' bf16 ' with leading and trailing whitespace), whether --dtype overrides an invalid environment variable at the decide and serve entry points, and whether the environment variable retains its original value after being overridden.
That said, this change covers only validation and the error message; no performance or accuracy figures are given. The repository's own license is also not stated in this commit record (only a comment at the top of jevany/runtime.py notes that the code is derived from Apache-2.0). Environments that already have a value such as 'bfloat16' set in JEVANY_DTYPE were previously ignored silently, but now fail at startup. It is close to a defensive fix that surfaces configuration errors that used to be ignored silently.
