github/gh-aw is a GitHub CLI extension called GitHub Agentic Workflows (`gh-aw`) that defines agent-based repository automation with Markdown and YAML frontmatter and runs it on GitHub Actions. Frontmatter is a YAML configuration block placed at the very top of a file. It is a form where you delegate work such as issue handling, PR review, and CI failure analysis to the agent. The latest release is v0.92.0.
Execution works in two stages. The `gh aw compile` command validates the workflow source and produces a standard workflow file that GitHub Actions can run as-is. Agent jobs run in a read-only sandbox by default. A sandbox is an isolated execution environment, and writes to the repository are applied only through validated `safe-outputs` jobs, with limited permissions. safe-outputs is the output path that applies validated write jobs with narrow permissions. It is written in Go, the license is MIT, and it has 5424 stars. The repository was created in August 2025.
That said, this is where what can be verified runs out. The changes included in v0.92.0 are not given. There are no performance numbers or real adoption cases either; the only filled-in evaluation score is a momentum of 2.4 out of 10, while the freshness, technology, and quality items are empty. So for now, it is better read as a configuration tool where you have to decide what to delegate, rather than as automation backed by performance evidence.
