storytold/cadcraft v0.7.0 is a project that reimplements an AutoCAD-style 2D CAD drawing app in pure Rust. It was built as a clean-room effort, handles DXF and DWG drawings, and also ships an MCP server and a headless CLI. Clean room means building a fresh implementation without copying the original implementation or its assets.
The app targets drawing and editing drawings plus file format compatibility. DXF is read and written in both ASCII and binary form from R12 through 2018. DWG is read from R13 through 2018 via the open-source acadrust library and saved in R2000 format. Drawing commands include the LINE, PLINE, CIRCLE, ARC and SPLINE families, while editing commands include the ERASE, OFFSET, TRIM and FILLET families. The documentation also states that 11 object snaps and polar tracking are supported. The MCP server and headless CLI give agents a way to work with drawings. Because the upper layer has no knowledge of ui-egui, the frontend can be swapped, and cargo xtask ci checks formatting, Clippy, tests, asset copyrights, crate layering and wasm builds.
The project says that icons, drafting fonts, hatch patterns and line types are defined in code, and that sample drawings are generated by code as well. The README describes the project as being at an early development stage, with the remaining gaps recorded in ROADMAP and docs/gaps.md. No benchmark or test-pass counts are given, so at this point it is better regarded as a CAD app under development than a finished alternative.
